Well, we are back in the Big D from Project Walk and are settling into my house. The house is almost done and looks fabulous! I can’t begin to thank Jeff, Jenn and the “gianormous” list of people who donated their time, services and supplies. Many of you I know I don't know you helped, but my gratitude is there nonetheless… Please accept it!
SO…. Project Walk was, in a word, AMAZING! We were there four weeks and from the minute we walked in the door, I knew I was in the right place. Their methodology basically says if you put a person in a wheelchair, drug them up so that any movement/energy are blocked (involuntary spasms, nerve pain) and never work the muscles, of course they won’t walk. So, they do the opposite. From the time I wheeled in the door, they had me out of the chair and exercising. They focused on my muscles not receiving signals due to my injury in order to create new neurological pathways around the spinal cord blockage through passive movement, repetition and visualization. They assisted/performed the exercises with me and I contributed as much physically as I could and visualized/tried to move my muscles along with them. When I went, I had a “two pack’’ of abs beginning to function and now I have a ‘’4 four pack’’ which I can feel and command. Granted, they aren’t strong enough to hold me up or my tummy in yet, but it is much improvement and definite progress!! While there, I moved my leg. Not far and I couldn’t feel the entire movement, but I told it to move and it did, numerous times. They had me standing and walking with a lot of assistance. We have pictures I plan to upload soon.
After a month of training with them, I feel like there is a path by which I can achieve my goal of walking. We have our training manual/DVD from Project Walk and setting up a gym in my house to continue what we learned. I will be calling out to my friends for assistance in the workouts as many of them require more than one person to assist me in the movements or move me from exercise station to station, as you will see when I get those pics uploaded...
I hope all is well and I look forward to seeing y’all much more now that we are finally getting settled!!
